| Obverse description | Central round hole divides the date 19-08, with the numerals positioned to the left and right respectively. Above the hole, an imperial crown flanked by ornate foliate scrollwork is prominently displayed in relief. The legend DEUTSCH OST- / AFRIKA appears in two lines below the hole in bold serif lettering. The entire design is contained within a beaded border running along the coin's circumference. The composition and layout reflect the characteristic holed coinage design developed for German East Africa. |
