Sundsvalls Enskilda Bank was one of the Swedish provincial private banks operating under the enskilda bank system, which granted chartered institutions the right to issue their own notes — a privilege that ended definitively with the Riksbank's monopoly consolidation in 1904. This note falls squarely in the final years of that arrangement, printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company, whose intaglio work for Scandinavian provincial issuers during this period was competent if unremarkable.
The Sundsvall region's economy ran heavily on timber and sawmill exports, and the local bank's notes circulated primarily among the northern coastal trade rather than nationally. Redemption was legally guaranteed but practically contingent on the issuing bank's solvency.
