Malawi's 1978 conservation coinage was part of a coordinated WWF-linked program that prompted dozens of developing nations to issue silver pieces throughout the 1970s, ostensibly funding wildlife protection while generating hard currency through collector sales abroad. Malawi's contribution focused on species endemic or critical to the Lake Malawi basin — at the time under genuine ecological pressure from overfishing and habitat loss.
KM#16 was struck at the British Royal Mint, which handled most of Malawi's commemorative output during this period.
