| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing effigy of Ngwazi Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda, Life President of Malawi, engraved in high relief with fine portraiture detail attributed to Paul Vincze. The legend NGWAZI DR.H.KAMUZU BANDA·LIFE PRESIDENT curves along the upper periphery, while the country name MALAWI appears prominently in large capitals along the lower field beneath the portrait. The flat inner border cleanly separates the legend from the coin's rim. |

The date of independence '6th July 1964' appears in script between the arms and the numeral.
