Malawi's independence in 1964 severed ties with the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, but the new nation's commemorative coinage program took another decade to fully develop. This 1974 issue marks ten years of independence under Hastings Banda, by then well into his consolidation of one-party rule — a political climate that shaped which anniversaries received official celebration and which were quietly ignored.
