10 Kwanzas

Angola's 2012 coinage series was issued as the country entered its second decade of post-civil war recovery, following the end of a 27-year conflict in 2002 that had devastated the national economy and rendered earlier currency largely meaningless. The kwanza itself had been redenominated multiple times — the current kwanza readjustado series replaced the previous currency at a rate of 1,000 to 1 in 1995.

The bimetallic construction was a deliberate anti-counterfeiting measure adopted as Angola's oil revenues began stabilizing government finances enough to justify the tooling investment.
