Greece struck nickel coinage fitfully in the years before the Balkan Wars, and the 1912 issue landed in the middle of the First Balkan War — a conflict that saw Greece gain Thessaloniki and nearly double its territory. Coins minted that year entered circulation into an economy abruptly stretched across newly absorbed populations and trade networks.
KM#63 had been in production since 1895, making the 1912 strike one of the later dates in a long run.
