Malta's millennium note was issued as a commemorative piece rather than a workhorse denomination, yet it entered general circulation — an unusual decision for a note of this type. The Central Bank chose to mark the year 2000 with its highest circulating denomination, which gives the issue a practical weight that purely commemorative notes lack.
De La Rue's involvement was longstanding with Maltese currency by this point, and the security specification — watermark and thread only — reflects the standard then applied across the circulating series rather than any enhanced commemorative treatment. The note was demonetized when Malta adopted the euro in January 2008, cutting its circulation life to under eight years.
