The Institut d'Emission de Syrie was a transitional body, standing in after the French-era Banque de Syrie et du Liban was dissolved following Syrian independence. By 1955, Syria was in the process of establishing the Central Bank of Syria, which would absorb the Institut entirely by 1956 — making this one of the final note types issued under that short-lived authority.
Bradbury Wilkinson's New Malden facility handled a significant volume of post-colonial currency work for newly independent states through the 1950s, competing directly with Waterlow and De La Rue for the same contracts. The P#78A designation distinguishes this from related signature varieties in the series.
