The "truchos" — a slang term for fakes — were not counterfeits in the criminal sense but satirical protest notes circulated during Carlos Menem's presidency, targeting widespread corruption allegations against his administration. They mimicked the aesthetic of contemporary Argentine currency closely enough to cause confusion in low-light transactions, which led to a brief but genuine law enforcement response over their distribution.
