Bhutan's first truly modern banknote series — of which this is part — was introduced following the establishment of the Royal Monetary Authority in 1982, making notes like this transitional pieces issued in the brief window before the RMA formally assumed central banking functions. Thomas De La Rue's involvement here is consistent with Bhutan's postcolonial financial infrastructure, much of it built with Indian technical and institutional assistance during the 1970s.
The ngultrum was pegged at par to the Indian rupee at introduction, a relationship that persists to this day.
