The Nuevo Sol series was introduced in 1991 as Peru replaced the Inti, itself a currency that had lasted only seven years before hyperinflation rendered it worthless — the Inti had depreciated to the point where the conversion rate was one Nuevo Sol to one million Intis. De La Rue's Gateshead facility, formerly T.D.E. and later absorbed into the De La Rue group, handled production of this issue, one of several denominations in the series printed there rather than at the company's Basingstoke plant.
