Obverse description Central field dominated by the elaborate tughra of Sultan Mahmud II, executed in the ornate Ottoman calligraphic style with characteristic looped and scrolled elements. Below the tughra, a horizontal line divides the field from the lower inscription bearing the mint name Tripoli West (Tarabulus Gharb) and the accession year 1223 AH. The entire design is enclosed within a circular border of dots or a cable pattern typical of hammered provincial Ottoman coinage. The irregular flan and characteristic striking style reflect the provincial mint at Tripoli.
