The Banco del Cauca was one of several regional Colombian banks chartered under the 1870s free banking legislation, which allowed individual states under the Rionegro Constitution to authorize their own note-issuing institutions. The Cauca region, commercially linked more closely to the Pacific coast trade routes than to Bogotá, operated with considerable monetary autonomy during this period.

ABNC produced notes for dozens of Latin American clients simultaneously in the early 1880s, and the S360 series likely shares plate infrastructure with other Colombian regional issues of the period. Worth checking whether the serial numbering system matches the contemporaneous Banco de Bogotá contracts — overlapping ABNC production runs of this era sometimes did.
