Additional information

Chile's 1895 gold coinage was produced under the monetary reforms following the War of the Pacific, which ended in 1884 and left Chile controlling the nitrate-rich territories of Tarapacá and Antofagasta. The windfall from nitrate export taxes flooded the treasury, and the Casa de Moneda in Santiago found itself with the unusual problem of too much revenue — prompting expansion of the gold coinage in denominations that had previously seen only sporadic output.

The Fr#49 designation places this squarely in Friedberg's South American gold reference, where survival rates for Chilean gold of this period are noted as low relative to mintage figures, largely due to melting during the currency crises of the early twentieth century.
