The Provincia del Chaco note is one of dozens of provincial emergency currencies that flooded Argentina during the 2001–2002 economic collapse, when the federal government froze bank deposits under the *corralito* and provinces lost access to federal transfers. Chaco, chronically one of Argentina's poorest provinces, began issuing these *cuasimonedas* — quasi-monies — to pay public sector wages and keep local commerce moving. They were legal tender only within provincial borders, accepted under effective compulsion by merchants who had little alternative.
Casa de Moneda's involvement gave the series more physical credibility than some provincial emissions of the period, but that didn't stop widespread public reluctance to accept them at face value.
