Cuba's 1980 joint space flight commemorates the Intercosmos mission that sent Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez to the Soviet Salyut 6 station — making him the first Cuban, first Latin American, and first person of African descent to fly in space. The mission launched September 18, 1980, with Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Romanenko. Tamayo Méndez was later awarded the title Hero of the Republic of Cuba and Hero of the Soviet Union upon return.
Two distinct varieties exist under the JMA references AAEE020 and AAEE021, likely distinguished by finish type — one proof, one specimen or similar treatment — a common production split for Cuban commemoratives of this period.
