POW camp scrip from the First World War, issued at the Chemnitz prisoner facility for internal use — preventing captives from accumulating Reichsmark currency that could fund escape attempts or black market dealings outside the wire. The Hatz firm was a local Chemnitz printer, not a specialist security house, which shows in the modest production values typical of camp issues from 1914–18.
The official stamp served as the primary authentication device. Without it, the paper was worthless — and forgery within a camp, while not unheard of, carried severe disciplinary consequences under the Hague Convention's camp administration rules.
