Labora-Gesellschaft was a Berlin-based consumer cooperative that issued its own small-denomination paper scrip — a practice common among German worker and cooperative organizations in the early twentieth century, particularly before and during the First World War when metallic coinage disappeared from everyday transactions. Friedenau, then still an independent municipality south of Berlin, had a notably active cooperative culture before its absorption into Greater Berlin in 1920.

Richard Ludwig's lithographic workshop in Berlin produced a significant volume of this kind of local scrip, making attribution of individual issues straightforward where printer credits survive.
