| 正面描述 | The Latvian state coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield with a rising sun in the upper half and two rampant lions passant in the lower quarters, supported on either side by decorative ribbon mantling. Three five-pointed stars appear above the shield in a curved row. The date 1922 is split across the field flanking the shield, with '19' to the left and '22' to the right. The national legend LATVIJA curves along the lower rim, with the mint name HUGUENIN inscribed in small letters at the very bottom of the field. |

Latvia's post-independence coinage program moved quickly after the 1918 declaration, but the new lats monetary system required extensive pattern work before production contracts were finalized. The 1922 nickel patterns were struck in limited numbers as the Latvian government evaluated compositions and designs ahead of committing to full production runs — the circulating 10 santimu pieces ultimately went out in bronze-nickel rather than pure nickel.
Pattern survivors from this evaluation phase are institutionally and privately rare in roughly equal measure.
