The Southern Rhodesia Currency Board was not a central bank but a colonial sterling exchange authority — it held British government securities in London as backing for every note issued, a rigid arrangement that gave the territory no monetary independence whatsoever. Bradbury Wilkinson printed this series, as they did much of the colonial currency coming out of London for British Africa during this period.
The twelve-year issue window spans the entirety of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath, a time when Southern Rhodesia contributed disproportionately to the war effort both in manpower and material. Notes from the early 1939–40 dates are considerably scarcer than later ones.
