The Brennan-McElligott signature combination dates this note to the very early wartime issues of the series — Joseph Brennan served as Governor from the bank's foundation in 1943, while J. J. McElligott was Secretary of the Department of Finance, a pairing that reflects the unusually tight relationship between the Central Bank and the Irish Treasury during the war years. Ireland's wartime neutrality did little to insulate the economy from severe import disruption, and paper currency demand spiked as banking activity shifted away from sterling.
Waterlow & Sons had been printing Irish notes since the Currency Commission era, and the relationship continued seamlessly into the new Central Bank's first issues. The P#1D designation places this among the earliest denomination releases under the 1943 Central Bank Act.
