This coin was issued to mark the sesquicentennial of Peruvian independence, commemorating the 150th anniversary of José de San Martín's proclamation of July 28, 1821. The anniversary fell during the military government of Juan Velasco Alvarado, whose nationalist agrarian revolution gave the occasion an ideological charge well beyond routine commemoration. Velasco had nationalized foreign oil interests in 1968 and was in the midst of dismantling the hacienda system — the sesquicentennial fitted neatly into a broader project of redefining Peruvian national identity around indigenous and anti-colonial themes.
