Turkmenistan's 1993 coinage series was among the first acts of monetary independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union, with the manat system introduced to replace the Soviet ruble still circulating in the newly sovereign state. The teňňe subdivision took its name from a historic Central Asian unit with roots stretching back through Timurid-era trade.
Copper-plated steel was a practical concession — the country lacked domestic minting infrastructure entirely and contracted production abroad during a period of acute economic disruption.
