Hungary's 1946 hyperinflation is the most severe on record — the peak monthly inflation rate in July 1946 exceeded 4 × 10¹⁶ percent, a figure that makes Weimar Germany look stable by comparison. The adópengő was introduced in January 1946 as an indexed unit tied to official price indices, intended to give the tax system and savings a buffer against the collapsing pengő. It didn't hold. Within months, adópengő denominations were racing upward just as fast.
By the time the forint replaced the entire system on 1 August 1946, one forint was set equal to 400,000 quadrillion pengő. The 100,000 adópengő note, despite a print run of over twelve million, had an effective purchasing life measured in days.
