100 000 Dong

Vietnam's 100,000 Dong note had a complicated introduction. The State Bank had issued a 50,000 Dong note in 1990, but inflation made a higher denomination practically necessary within a few years — this was the largest denomination in circulation when it appeared, part of the broader monetary stabilization effort following Doi Moi reforms that had been underway since 1986.

Cotton paper with watermark and thread was the chosen security specification at a time when Vietnam was still years away from adopting polymer substrates. The polymer 100,000 Dong eventually issued in 2004 effectively retired this series from active use.
