Navruz — the Persian new year observed on the spring equinox — was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016, with Uzbekistan among the multinational nominators. The 2022 gold issue ties directly to that recognized status, part of a broader Central Bank program of commemorative bullion released in the years following Uzbekistan's post-Karimov economic liberalization, during which foreign exchange restrictions were dramatically loosened and domestic gold markets opened to private buyers for the first time in decades.
