Equatorial Guinea's switch from the Ekwele (singular of Bipkwele) to the CFA Franc zone in 1985 rendered the entire Ekwele series obsolete within six years of issue. This 1979 note was printed by Spain's state security printer — a natural choice given that the country only gained independence from Madrid in 1968, and institutional ties to Spanish suppliers persisted well into the following decade.
The FNMT printed for a number of newly independent Francophone and Hispanophone African states during this period, but Equatorial Guinea's issues remain among the lower-circulation examples of their output. The country's population at the time was under 350,000.
