Ghana's 1986 Commonwealth Games issue commemorates the Edinburgh games, where the political atmosphere was as charged as the athletics. Thirty-two African and Caribbean nations had boycotted the 1986 games over Margaret Thatcher's refusal to impose economic sanctions on apartheid South Africa — a walkout that left the event significantly diminished. Ghana was among the boycotting nations.
The coin exists despite Ghana's absence from Edinburgh.
