Bahrain's 1978 gold 100 Dinars was issued by the Monetary Agency during a period of aggressive sovereign wealth positioning across the Gulf — oil revenues were being converted into hard assets at a pace that made commemorative and bullion-adjacent gold coinage a natural instrument of state prestige. The Monetary Agency itself had only been established in 1973, replacing the Bahrain Currency Board as the island moved toward fuller financial independence from sterling-zone arrangements.
Mintage was extremely limited, as with most Gulf state gold issues of this decade. Fr#3 cross-references place it firmly in the collector rather than circulation sphere from the moment of issue.
