Libya's 1979 coinage was issued under the authority of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, the state structure Gaddafi formalized following the 1977 Declaration of Authority of the People. The dirham denomination had been reintroduced only in 1975, replacing the millieme system as part of a broader effort to sever visual and institutional ties to the pre-revolutionary monetary order.
