| Additional information |
Eritrea declared independence from Ethiopia in May 1993 after a 30-year war and a UN-supervised referendum — this coin was issued the same year, part of a gold bullion and commemorative program the newly established Bank of Eritrea used to generate hard currency before the country had fully built its financial infrastructure. The dinosaur subject has no particular connection to Eritrean territory and reflects the international commemorative coin market of the early 1990s, when newly independent states routinely licensed exotic themes to foreign minting operations to attract collector buyers.
