The Bermuda Monetary Authority was established in 1969, replacing the Bermuda Currency Board, and the island's dollar has been pegged to the US dollar at par ever since — a fixed rate that has held without interruption for over five decades. That parity gives the BMA's higher denominations an unusual position: a $100 Bermuda note is always worth exactly $100 US, making the exchange arithmetic trivial but the note itself rarely encountered outside the island's banking system.
De La Rue's involvement with Bermuda's currency dates back well before this issue. The 1996 series retains the watermark as its primary security feature — modest by the standards of what De La Rue was producing for other clients at the time, when polymer substrates and holographic foils were already in wider use.
