Namibia gained independence from South Africa only in 1990, making this 1995 issue one of the earliest gold bullion-grade commemoratives struck under the Bank of Namibia's authority. The Miss Universe tie-in reflects a specific moment of national pride: Michelle McLean, a Namibian, had won the Miss Universe title in 1992 — the first winner from an independent Namibia, and only the third from the African continent in the pageant's history.
