The National Bank of Greece turned to the American Bank Note Company for this issue at a time when no European security printer could match ABNC's intaglio work for quality and counterfeit resistance. Greece was a young state with a fragile banking reputation, and the choice of a New York firm was partly practical, partly a signal of institutional seriousness to foreign creditors.
The 1867–1869 date range reflects successive issue dates rather than a design revision — the plates remained unchanged across the span. High-denomination notes from this period survive in very small numbers; most that did circulate were worn to illegibility within a decade and never formally retired in any documented redemption campaign.
