The Banco Nacional Ultramarino occupied a peculiar position among colonial issuing authorities — chartered in Lisbon but functioning as the note-issuing bank across Portugal's overseas territories, meaning a single institution produced currency for colonies spanning Africa, Asia, and the Pacific simultaneously.
