To the left, a coastal fortification or rocky shoreline is rendered in low relief. The denomination '100' appears in large numerals in the upper left field, with 'euro' inscribed below it. The legend 'FINLAND 1997 ÅLAND' is engraved along the lower rim in Latin characters. |

| Additional information |
Finland issued this coin to mark the 75th anniversary of the Åland Islands' autonomy, granted in 1921 after the League of Nations intervened in a sovereignty dispute between Finland and Sweden. The resolution was unusual: the islands went to Finland on condition of guaranteed Swedish-speaking cultural rights and permanent demilitarization — a status that holds to this day.
The .750 fineness is characteristic of Finnish commemorative gold from this period, favored partly for its color warmth over higher-purity alternatives.
