Additional information

The BEAC replaced the Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique Équatoriale et du Cameroun in 1972 as the common central bank for six states — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. Equatorial Guinea's inclusion was unusual: a former Spanish colony joining a franc zone institution, which it did in 1985 after years of economic isolation following the brutal Macías Nguema dictatorship. Coins of this type circulated across all member states simultaneously, distinguished only by a single letter code identifying the issuing country on each piece.
