The BEAC franc zone encompasses six nations — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — all bound to a fixed parity with the euro through a French Treasury guarantee that dates to the post-colonial monetary agreements of 1972. That arrangement has survived repeated calls for dissolution, most recently during the 2019–2020 debate over renaming the CFA franc entirely.
Nickel plated steel replaced cupronickel in BEAC coinage as commodity prices made the older alloy increasingly uneconomical for low-denomination circulation pieces.
