Beschrijving keerzijde A detailed scenic view of the lacustrine village of Ganvié, situated on Lake Nokoué, occupies the entire field within a beaded inner border. In the foreground, a figure paddles a dugout canoe across the lake waters, while a second standing figure wades or poles nearby. The middle ground features the characteristic stilt-raised structures of the village, with thatched-roof dwellings built over the water and supported by wooden stilts. The legend GANVIE is inscribed along the lower rim in raised Latin letters. The composition conveys the distinctive architectural and cultural identity of one of West Africa's most celebrated lake communities.

Aanvullende informatie

Dahomey struck this coin to mark the eleventh anniversary of independence from France, achieved on August 1, 1960. The issue was never intended for circulation — produced for the international collector market at a moment when newly independent African states were generating revenue through commemorative programs sold abroad. Dahomey itself had virtually no numismatic infrastructure of its own; the pieces were struck under contract in Europe.

The republic lasted only until 1975, when Mathieu Kérékou's Marxist-Leninist government renamed the country Benin, making the Dahomey issuing authority short-lived by any measure.
