Cameroon has issued commemorative pieces under its own authority since independence, but by the 2000s the country had become a vehicle for European private minting houses producing collector-market pieces with no meaningful domestic circulation. This 2011 issue falls squarely into that category — struck almost certainly by a European contractor and exported directly into the collector trade, never touching Cameroonian commerce.
John Paul II died in 2005 and was beatified in May 2011, which likely triggered this release.
