The "North Sea Empire" series, launched by Danmarks Nationalbank in 2009 and completed over nearly a decade, was designed around Danish history organized by chronological era rather than the conventional approach of fixed portraits or institutions. Thomas Stebbins, an American-born banknote designer, won the commission — an unusual choice for a Danish issue, though he had established his reputation through previous Nordic currency work.
Polymer substrate adoption for this denomination was part of a deliberate late-series upgrade, bringing the physical note in line with durability standards the earlier paper issues in the same series could not match.
