The Banque de Syrie et du Liban — a French-controlled institution operating under the Mandate — found itself in an awkward position after 1940. With Vichy controlling Syria briefly and then Free French forces taking over following the July 1941 armistice, issuing authority nominally continued but logistical realities forced an unusual arrangement: this note was printed in Jerusalem by the Government Printer of Palestine, a British-controlled facility.
It is one of the few instances where a French Mandate currency was produced under British auspices, reflecting the strange administrative overlap that characterized the Levant during the early war years.
