Mauritania had only established the ouguiya in 1973, replacing the CFA franc at a rate of 1 ouguiya to 5 francs — a deliberate break from the monetary frameworks inherited from French West Africa. This note belongs to the first full series issued by the Banque Centrale de Mauritanie, printed by De La Rue in London while the country was simultaneously navigating its claim to the southern portion of Spanish Sahara ahead of the 1975 Madrid Accords.
Pick 3A is distinguished from later issues primarily by signature combinations; collectors should verify the signing officials rather than relying on date alone.
