Obverse description The obverse is printed in dark brown ink on aged paper, with a rectangular border of fine geometric lathe-work. A central vignette in the left field depicts a harbour or port scene with vessels and smoke, enclosed within an octagonal frame. To the upper right, a small oval cartouche bears a coat of arms. The denomination CIEN appears in a panel at the top, the large numeral inscription CIEN Pesos in bold script at centre, and the lower corners each carry the numeral 100. The text reads 'El Estado de Buenos Ayres RECONOCE este Billete por CIEN Pesos Moneda Corriente POR EL DIRECTORIO del Banco y Casa de Moneda', with a manuscript date of 1 Mayo 1856.
