Bradbury Wilkinson printed this note under contract for one of the youngest central banks in the world — Banco Nacional da Guiné-Bissau had only been established after independence from Portugal in 1974, and the country was still building the basic infrastructure of a sovereign monetary system through the early 1980s. The 1983 series, of which this is part, represented a modest expansion of the note range rather than a redesign.
Bradbury Wilkinson closed its New Malden operation in 1990 when it was absorbed into De La Rue, making this among the later Guinea-Bissau issues to bear that imprint.
