This piece belongs to a long-running Mexican commemorative bimetallic series that began in 1992, designed to highlight pre-Columbian cultures and the colonial period. The 100 Pesos denomination was chosen specifically for these issues to signal collectible intent — they were never seriously intended for circulation, and most left the mint directly into collector hands.
Charles III reigned from 1759 to 1788 and oversaw the most ambitious overhaul of Spanish colonial administration in the eighteenth century, the Bourbon Reforms, which restructured taxation and trade in ways that accelerated colonial resentment. The Casa de Moneda de México itself was directly affected — it had operated as a private lease until Charles III brought it under Crown control in 1732, decades before his reign but central to the Bourbon centralization his policies extended.
