The Banco de la República was established in July 1923 under Law 25, Colombia's direct response to the Kemmerer Mission — Edwin Kemmerer's team of U.S. economists had recommended a central bank modeled on Federal Reserve principles, and the institution opened within months of that report. This note, from the bank's inaugural series, was printed before the ink on the enabling legislation was fully dry.
American Bank Note Company held the contract from the outset, a predictable choice given their dominant position across Latin American central bank commissions in that decade. The 100 Pesos Oro denomination was the series ceiling — a high-value instrument in a country where most transactions ran well below it.
