Australia's first independent paper currency came from the Commonwealth's assumption of note-issuing authority under the Australian Notes Act 1910, which abolished state bank issues and gave the federal government a monopoly. The £100 was the highest denomination in this inaugural series — a denomination sized for commercial and interbank settlement rather than retail use, which explains its extreme scarcity in any form today.

The Collins/Allen serif-prefix variant is not recorded as issued, suggesting the plates were prepared but the notes were held or destroyed before release. The late Cerutty/Collins Z-suffix and Z-prefix variants mark the final signing combination of the series, with the Z prefix considered the rarer of the two.
