Indonesia's first domestic currency issue, the ORI (Oeang Republik Indonesia), was launched on 30 October 1945 — a date now commemorated annually as Indonesian Finance Day. The 100 Rupiah was among the highest denominations in that inaugural series, authorized by Finance Minister A.A. Maramis just weeks after the independence proclamation. Printing was handled domestically under improvised conditions, the new republic having neither an established security printer nor access to the sophisticated facilities the Dutch colonial apparatus had relied upon.
The Dutch refused to recognize the ORI as legal tender, and in occupied zones it was actively suppressed. Notes captured by Dutch forces were sometimes defaced or destroyed outright.
